I am a huge Cougar fan. I like Bronco Mendenhall and support what he is doing in the program. He is great for the university, great for the church, and great for his players. I do think his perspective might be a couple degrees off, however, with regards to his role as coach. . .
Two players kicked in a door in the middle of the night. Bronco suspended them. Great. Good job. You have my full support. In talking with the press, however, Bronco assumed full responsibility for the issue. He was quoted as saying: "I am responsible for their agency."
Did he miss primary the day that they reviewed the Second Article of Faith?
We can teach, we can model, we can influence--but we cannot control. And we are not responsible for other's actions. I understand I am being nit-picky about semantics, and I would guess that we both agree on the fundamental principle involved; but it would be unfortunate if Bronco believed that his actions were the determining factor in his players' behaviors. As parents, as teachers, as leaders, as coaches, we simply can't take upon ourselves the responsibility for other's actions. This is not congruent with gospel principles. To do so would show a lack of faith in others, a lack of faith in the gospel, and a certain level of condescension (albeit unintended) towards those we wish to control.
I have been working on a lengthy post surrounding this topic. It is a topic of great importance--and particularly relevant to parents and church members who have callings as stewards over others. Having a clear understanding of this topic is crucial as it directs our actions and attitudes towards those to whom we are closest. Bronco's statement has caused me to think about this issue some more.
I'd hate for Bronco to try to repent for these two. . .

Did Bronco ditch primary as a kid?
