Everyone has a stony place

I taught Gospel Doctrine on Sunday and the topic was Matthew 13 - Jesus taught them in Parables. The class discussion was wonderful; the spirit was strong; and we all felt enriched. The key was our focus of the discussion. With the help of some great comments early on the lesson, I suggested that we interpret this parable in a very personal way.
Remember, as the sower sows his seeds, some fall by the wayside, some on stony places, some in thorns, and some on good ground. The seed represents the word of God and the different types of ground represent different reactions to the word. In class, we considered the fact that the seed could represent a piece of the gospel, not only the gospel in its entirety. And, each of us has a wayside, a stony place, thorns, and good ground. Key questions for self-reflections include:
Which gospel principle(s) fall on my stony place? Which do I not let take root?
Which gospel principle(s) fall among my thorns? When and why? What can I do
to prevent this?
Etc. Etc.
It is much more useful in Sunday School when we talk about how the lesson applies to our personal lives. Too many times we focus on how "so and so" or "the world" are acting a in a certain way incongruent with the gospel. First of all, how do we know this and why are we judging? Secondly, how does this help me or the class to point this out?
Lesson comments should always reflect upon ourselves so that we can apply the principles in a way that will help us and our families.
