"" I would like a question answered today," said Tiffany.
"Provided it's not the one about how you get baby hedgehogs," said the man.
"No, "said Tiffany patiently. "It's about zoology."
"Zoology eh? That's a big word, isn't it."
"No, actually it isn't," said Tiffany. "Patronizing is a big word. Zoology is really quite short."”
from Wee Free Men, by Terry Pratchett
He was a sergeant, he told himself, which meant that he was paid more than the corporal, which meant that he thought more expensive thoughts.
from The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, by Terry Pratchett
New favorite author right now is Terry Pratchett. I understand that some of his stuff can be rather irreverent, but I've yet to run across anything that I've had to put down. I find his work insightful; he has a refreshing way of exposing the humand condition and his take on human relations is spot on. He also is a master of the language and there are so many times that I want to stop and highlight the text. Both books, however, I've listened to on tape in the car. Stephen Briggs is the narrator and he does a great job. I will read the sequel to Wee Free Men next (already checked it out from the library) and I am interested to see if I'll like it as much as the audio version.
By the way, I feel much more endeared to Anna's rats after reading his Amazing Maurice book. Favorite hero from that book is definitely Darktan. Look forward to reading more from Pratchett.
